Philip Creaser, a Nova Scotia custom home builder, has a crew of four and a solid list of 26 contractors to call on for extras such as plumbing, wiring and concrete pouring. After 14 years in the trade, and a life-long passion about building, Philip struck out on his own in 2000. Early on, he and his men kept busy with renovations and small new construction contracts such as garages and cabins. |
Today, the company is incorporated. Phil's employees are covered by workers' compensation. Insurance on his tools, vehicles, workshops and work-in-progress lets him sleep at night.
In 2005, Philip was contracted for his first new large house and early in 2006, he already had a couple of "new starts."
He counts himself fortunate to have such a top-knotch, hard-working crew.
" I have two painters full time. They do demolition, clean up, prep for renovations, they sand floors, paint, stain. They have a company van and a trailer."
His two carpenters have a second trailer loaded down with tools of the trade.
" All of my guys are good workers," says Phil. " I can leave them with lists if I have to be away for a couple of days. It will always be done and more. It's just the way they are."
Front and centre, builder Philip Creaser is backed by his crew, from left: Scott Allen, Donald Whynot, Marc de Vries, Andrew Barss and Cory Cook. They've been called on by Riverport Metalworks to double their work space with a 55 by 35 foot extension that's 25-feet at its highest point. It will comfortably house the welders and their equipment, including crane and overhead booms.
